Spare Us the Cutter

fnvOne thing you should always do whilst venturing into unknown territory is keep a journal of your findings. So it was with Fallout: New Vegas and my forays into the depths of the Geck. I’ve not uploaded my findings publically for a while, so here’s the latest edition, in its full scarily obsessive sperg-tastic glory!

Latest updates include a lot more DLC info, especially some juicy Dead Money stuff, new cut locations from Chris Avellone’s Rezzed presentation, as well as loads of small updates for the main game.

For clarity’s sake, let’s call this edition version 1.

Read it here

Oh, and if you like Alpha Protocol…. Good news coming soon!

The location Willow Beach seen on the early map seen at the Rezzed 2013 presentation was going to be an abandoned NCR occupied by the Legion.

The only source for this place existing (until now) was the Fallout: New Vegas Official Game Guide. Seems kind of weird to mention a seemingly major battle and location in the Strategy Guide only…

Awesome, this was the kind of feedback I was hoping to see when I put things on here. Does anyone have any tidbits on the other “new” locations? (especially the one in the very bottom right)

      • Bobby says :

The real life Willow Beach is situated on the outside of a curve on the Colorado River, Arizona side. This particular curve seems to be replicated in-game. Maybe just coincidence.

        Anyway…

Sandy Valley is a real town just west of Goodsprings. It’s close enough that it could actually appear on the New Vegas map, but is outside of the released game’s invisible boundary.

        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandy_Valley,_Nevada

“Sandy Valley began in the 19th century as the five mining communities of Kingston, Sandy, RIPLEY, Mesquite, and Platina. It is roughly a forty-five mile drive from Las Vegas.”

That explains the Ripley location on the Rezzed 2013 map.

A location named Devil Peak appears on the Rezzed 2013 map south of Goodsprings. There is a real mountain with the same name there:

        http://www.summitpost.org/devil-peak/155083

South of Devil Peak there’s a location who’s name I can’t really make out.

Mummy Mountain (north of Jacobstown on the Rezzed map) is a real place:

        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mummy_Mountain_(Nevada)

Interestingly enough Camp Golf isn’t on the Rezzed map, instead at roughly the the same location there’s “Las Vegas Bay Campground.”

Nellis Airforce Base is nowhere to be seen either.

If I find anything else I’ll post it here. Keep up the good work on New Vegas cut stuff.

      • Bobby says :

Bonus: Garnet ( a location on the Rezzed map ) is a real place.

I found the the Elephant Hill location, nothing really there IRL:

        http://itouchmap.com/?d=42784&s=AZ&f=summit

Maybe it was going to be some sort of Legion camp?

I’m adding these now, just one aside – Nellis is on the rezzed map, it’s in about the same place as in the final game (maybe slightly south), and listed as “Nellis AFB” just to the left of Vault 34. I still can’t make out the bottom left location near the outpost, looks like “Cadida” or something, but I can’t find anything like that (some restaurants with that name). Based on what has been found so far I’d speculate it IS a real place, but don’t ask me where.

  3. moburma says :

Good work on these, I knew about Sandy Valley and Devil Peak, but you’ve done well finding Garnet etc. I spent a little while checking for these on google maps but never spotted them. Doesn’t help they’re practically microscopic in size in real life so barely appear on any maps.

I noticed quite a few places are missing from this map; obviously it’s unclear if this means they hadn’t been planned at this stage, or just simply not drawn up on the map. It does seem to be very early though. The fact it’s overlaid on top of what appears to be a real map is also helpful. it’s interesting to compare real maps to that of the in game one – it is kind of in proportion east to west, but naturally is massively squashed up north to south compared to real life. There’s a lot of empty desert out there in reality!

    • Bobby says :

There’s a piece of cut content I don’t think you mentioned in the pastebin summary.

I remember seeing on reddit a post about how a guy had used noclip in the elevator in the Lucky 38 Penthouse. He discovered was clearly the Lucky 38 rooftop, including the laser weapons Mr. House is supposed to have saved New Vegas with. He provided a load of screenshots and it clearly wasn’t a mod.

It’s obviously never seen in-game and people were speculating about which quest the roof was tied to.

      • moburma says :

Hmm, can you remember where you saw that? I can’t see anything like that in the game – if you look on top of the Lucky 38 it literally has no roof! It’s mesh is only textured one side, and there’s nothing above save for a peculiar door that I think was originally inside the secret room of the Penthouse. to be honest what you mentioned sounds like some sort of hoax. Perhaps it was some kind of LOD model?

I actually noticed something on the collectors cards today that made me flip my shit, but I’m not sure I can talk about it, for complicated reasons….

  4. Bobby says :

It looked reasonably legit, but maybe it was related to some sort of mod.

“I actually noticed something on the collectors cards today that made me flip my shit, but I’m not sure I can talk about it, for complicated reasons….”

    Sounds interesting…

I’m not sure if this is what you’re talking about, but there’s a playing card for a seemingly Legion-related faction called the “Speculatores”: http://hydra-images.cursecdn.com/fallout.gamepedia.com/8/8a/8_of_Clubs.jpg

I searched them up and they appear to be somehow tied to the Frumentarii historically: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speculatores

A few other oddities: Alexus ( the Legion Decanus in Techatticup Mine) has the honour of appearing on a playing card alongside Dead Sea, yet he has no lines and is only another enemy to fight if you’re anti-Legion. There’s a quote from him on the card despite this: http://hydra-images.cursecdn.com/fallout.gamepedia.com/e/e2/2_of_Clubs.jpg

Many characters don’t really match their in-game appearance too.

    • moburma says :

Speculatores are interesting but somewhat confusing. As you say they are mentioned only once in the game, in relation to Melissa and her scouting ability. It’s confusing as reading up on them, in real life they seemed to be more like how the frumentarii are portrayed in FN:V; as undercover scouts and assassins.

Frumentarii were apparently more involved inside actual Roman territory, where they were used to spy on fellow Romans, and expose corruption and conspiracies against the emperor, etc, rather than go undercover OUTSIDE the empire amongst its enemies.

The playing card supports this reading of Speculatores, the dagger and motto remind me of the British SAS dagger and “who dares wins” motto. Therefore I’d speculate (ho ho!) that they’d be some kind of long range undercover scout/assassin unit. Dunno what would differentiate them from frumentarii in that case, though.

Confusingly real life Speculatores attached to the emperor seemed to be near opposites in that they acted as elite bodyguards to the emperor and were attached to the Praetorian guard, as well as accompanying the emperor to public events etc, which seems the last thing you’d want undercover spies to do.

  5. Appendant says :

I’m not Bobby, but I did see that post on reddit as well… And I found it!

    • moburma says :

I’m pretty sure that’s fake/a mod. There is 100% definitely NOTHING on top of the Lucky 38. If you no clip up there (tcl in console) you can see for yourself. Looking at that screenshot, it is from a Worldspace. There are only a handful of worldspaces in NV and while this could conceivably be hidden away inside one of them, to my knowledge there is nothing like this in any of them. Don’t forget most of the worldspaces are actually used for large tracts of the game and something as big as this would be visible for miles. Then there’s the fact it just seems to be a load of poorly designed crap dumped on top of the existing Lucky38world worldspace (which as I explained has no roof in the game) – it doesn’t even look like the Lucky 38!

Finally it’s not a “cell” as the screenshot states, it’s a worldspace, a very different thing. The early mock up of the Lucky 38 Penthouse actually WAS a cell, which meant it had no landscape, it was just floating in the void. It used a clever trick where blinding light came in from outside the windows to make it look like it was really outside. I’m 95% sure the screenshot is of the lucky38worldspace from the game with some crap dumped on top. Sure it wasn’t an April fools?

      • Appendant says :

Yeah, it looks as if it’s just been added to the already existing Lucky 38 worldspace (you can see the penthouse below it). The user who posted it probably didn’t realize it was part of a mod they were using, which apparently is Run The Lucky 38; “Any PC gamers looking for a mod with this in, Run The Lucky 38 uses it in some scenes, and it’s very very well done” http://www.reddit.com/r/Fallout/comments/xb78r/cut_content_nv_roof_of_lucky_38/c5kxclc

I’m looking forward to the information you’ve dug up on Dead Sea, or any information on the Legion for that matter. Speaking of which, would you happen to know what the Speculatores collector card is referring to? It’s the one with a picture of a sword splattered with blood, the caption is “Mars favors the bold, does he not?”.

  6. moburma says :

I updated some stuff in the document the other day, including things about Dead Sea – not only is he mentioned in the strategy guide as being an NPC you can talk to (not possible in the final game), but his card actually contains a line of his cut dialogue!

The strategy guide is actually a treasure trove of cut things, being based on a seemingly unfinished version of the game.

I’ll add all the town info Bobby found later ( start a new job recently so not much free time)

  7. moburma says :

Oh yeah, when I say I’ve updating something, I mean it’s updated NOW! I stuck the document on dropbox, so literally the second I change anything you can see it. Of course this makes things confusing as hell and makes it hard to track changes, so err sorry about that. Maybe I should save versions every now and then so people/I can diff them.

Ultimately I will probably put this stuff up on a wiki type thing like cutting room floor or the vault wiki (I got someone asking me about that right now) cos a text file is horrible to actually read and understand things. I just did it this way cos it makes it easy for me to quickly dump some more info I found.

  8. moburma says :

Gah when I said Dead Sea above I actually meant Alexus. He has no dialogue at all in the final game but is mentioned as being someone you can talk to in the strategy guide, and the dialogue on the collectors card is his! The “secret” thing was this cos I might make a fun little mod out of it.

    • Bobby says :

Is there any of his dialogue, voiced or otherwise, still in the game files? Is the Collector’s card quote all that there is to work on?

I think a friend has a copy of the strategy guide so I’ll ask them for a loan of it if they still have it.
